Single mom & nurse w/ Student Loan Debt

I am a hard working single mother of 3. In May of 2007 I will be receiving my Master of Science in Nursing degree (MSN), and will take the National Certification exam to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in the field of psychiatric mental health as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). I choose this major instead of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) because of my strong desire to serve those who are most in need. However, unfortunately, the business of helping those who need you most seems to be the business in which you make the least amount of money. I have survived for the past 2 years of full-time grad school on student loans. I have worked part-time as an RN in order to make ends meet, but I have always needed to compensate with loans. I am very proud of what I have accomplished considering that statistics gathered ny Planned Parenthood shows that only about 1.5% of women who have a child between the ages of 15 and 17 receive a college education by the age of 30. I received my associate’s degree in Registered Nursing in 2002 (at age 28) and my BSN in 2004 (at age 30). I am now 32 and have been attending school full-time for a total of 7 years now. Both myself and my children, (now ages 14, 13 &7) have sacrificed a great deal along the way, but I believe that we have learned many valuable lessons about the importance of determination and perseverance. I have funded every penny of my education with student loans, and now I will need to begin to repay my debts. I have, and will continue to use my education to help many people who might otherwise go without help. I extend my compassion, knowledge and caring to those who are severely and persistently mentally ill and or suffer from drug and alcohol addiction. My federal loan debt totals approximately $77,000.00, (and is thankfully low interest), and my private loan debt is now in excess of $80,000.00 and unfortunately is around 8-10% interest. It is very hard for me to look at that total in writing! I feel a heavy burden, and now the reality of how I am going to manage to pay these payments in addition to the mortgage, car, insurance, utilities, etc.; not to mention the ever-increasing cost of raising children.
Is anyone out there able to help me find a way to get through this????
PLEASE HELP!!

To be quite honest I really chalk it up to feeling and being frustrated.  And when you're feeling frustrated everything gets frustrating

Hey Roseb,

I have seen some of the posts that people have written to you.  Some nice and some 'whiny'.

My Dad always taught me this "if you want something done, and want it done right, DO IT YOURSELF."

I teach others "if you want something DONE, do it yourself".

I know what it is to be in severe 'NEED'.  However, few things in life are FREE.

So, unless we know someone (a friend, relative) that will show us (about grants) then we have the following OPTIONS:  (1) FIND the information ourselves, or (2) TAKE a class on grantwriting.  They teach these at most community colleges and online, or (3) Contact our local Chamber of Commerce & Small Business Administration, or (4) Go to the library, interet or purchase a grantwriting book, or  (5) PAY someone else to get the info for us.

I know all of the EXCUSES, they run from not having money to needing what little money one do have for food, etc.  We can give every excuse in the world, no matter how true they are, it still WILL NOT change our OPTIONS.

Complaining about other people not doing stuff for us, or them charging a fee for doing stuff will not help our situation in the least!

And, another thing.  On this site, all information offered here is done a voluntary basis.  No one is REQUIRED to give anyone anything.

I am just so grateful to the people who are able to provide some insight and direction sometime.

God bless you,

ekikaseven

Unfortunately this is not true.  As someone that does grant research I can tell you that there are many grant and scholarship programs out there for nurses and the reason is because of the shortage of and the need for nurses.

There are also programs that provide financial help for single mothers.  My very first grant research client was a single mother who was looking for financial help with both starting her own business and continuing her education.  Since this was a few years back I was able to find her 4 such programs that provided finacial assistance including providing financial help with her student loan.  Yes there is actually an organization out there devoted to helping single mothers financially with their student loans.

Just because you can't find the information about these programs doesn't mean that they don't exist - it just means that you haven't found the information yet.

I'm a nurse with a Masters degress also and sorry to tell you that no one cares about funding for nurses. Probably the first time anyone who could actually do anything about it, i.e. the government, will be when they are in the hospital receiving lack of care due to the shortage of nurses. Your best bet would be to go work at a VA Hospital-they will help pay back some of your loans - about 38,000. Good luck; from another nurse in debt with children.
